Cardoso Provides Key Squad Update: Mvala Out Long-Term, Rayners Cleared to Train

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has offered a detailed update on
the team’s injury situation, revealing a significant long-term absence for
Mothobi Mvala and positive news regarding striker Iqraam Rayners.

The update comes as the Brazilians prepare to confirm their place in the CAF
Champions League group stages, holding a commanding 5-1 lead over Remo Stars
ahead of Sunday’s second leg.

Significant Setback for Mvala

Cardoso confirmed that defender Mothobi Mvala has undergone surgery and
faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The coach described it as “the most
difficult situation we have in our hands” and revealed he used Mvala’s
absence as motivation for the team’s first-leg victory.

Zwane’s Cautious Recovery

Regarding playmaker Themba Zwane, Cardoso stated his recovery “is not
something that will be finished in one week,” but is also not expected to be
a long-term issue. The club is taking a careful approach with the
influential attacker to ensure he returns in optimal condition.

Rayners Given All-Clear After Cardiac Scare

In welcome news, Cardoso addressed concerns around striker Iqraam Rayners,
who returned from national team duty with a cardiac query. The coach assured
that “there is no issue… that will take him out of his career.” Rayners
has now resumed training with the squad and is expected to be available for
selection soon.

Other Squad News

The update also included positive news on Zuko, who has returned to full
training, and a minor ankle injury for Mali. Cardoso confirmed the latter is
“not a huge thing” as nothing is broken.
