The standout performances of Mfundo Vilakazi at the recent FIFA Under-20
World Cup have positioned the Kaizer Chiefs midfielder for a potential
future move to Europe, according to his agent, Mike Makaab.
Vilakazi was a revelation for the Amajita, operating as their chief creative
force in the number 10 role and playing a pivotal part in helping the team
reach the knockout stages. His agent believes this international success
should serve as a springboard for the next phase of his career.
“I just think it’s a catalyst for him to move to greater heights,” Makaab
stated. “He’s got to look at it from a positive viewpoint and say to
himself, ‘I’ve done it at this level and now I’ve got to do it for my club
and become a full international at Bafana Bafana level’.”
The immediate challenge for the “sensible young man” is to translate his
World Cup form into a more consistent role at club level, where he has often
been used as an impact substitute for Kaizer Chiefs.
Makaab is confident that a European move is a natural next step if Vilakazi
continues on his current trajectory. “There is no doubt in my mind that
opportunities will come. These things unfold naturally… The time will come
sooner than later where his next move will be a serious move. I am talking
about a European move.”
Having returned to Chiefs, Vilakazi will be hoping to build on his global
exposure and earn more minutes, starting with the club’s upcoming domestic
fixtures.
