Mmodi Explains Demanding “Wing-Back” Role Under Former Coach Nabi

Kaizer Chiefs winger Pule Mmodi has shed light on the specific and
demanding tactical role he was assigned by the club’s former coach,
Nasreddine Nabi.

Speaking at a media open day, Mmodi revealed that Nabi and his assistant,
Khalil Ben Youssef, instructed him to be a high-energy player capable of
contributing in both attack and defence—a hybrid role he suggests is not
easily understood by casual observers.

“Since Coach Nabi came here, and Coach Khalil, he said he wants wingers with
so much energy to go up and down,” Mmodi explained. “For now, I can say I
play as a wing, fullback or whatever. If we attack, I have to be a wing, and
if we defend, I have to help the left back.”

The 32-year-old acknowledged that the position requires a high level of
football intelligence to fully appreciate. “I think for me, it’s so many
people who don’t understand the role that I play. Only football players or
someone who has a football sense can clearly understand the position that
I’m playing.”

Despite the challenges of the role, Mmodi, who joined Amakhosi in 2023,
insists he is comfortable with the responsibilities. “I’m familiar with the
position, as long as I always give my best because I’m a hard worker.”

The winger has made 10 appearances across all competitions this season but
is yet to find the back of the net—a statistic that perhaps underscores the
defensive duties added to his game under the previous coaching regime.
