Despite a stunning 5-1 first-leg victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars,
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has insisted his team will not be
complacent, promising a “serious” approach for the return fixture.
The dominant away win in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round
was a powerful response to recent criticism of the team’s form and style of
play. However, Cardoso is far from satisfied.
“We took it very seriously,” Cardoso stated, dissecting the tactical
triumph. “It’s not easy to play against a team with man-to-man marking all
over the pitch. We had to find the pass to break the lines… I think the
players understood very well what we put in place.”
While proud of the performance, the coach emphasized that the job is only
half done. “To score five goals against the champions of Nigeria is not
easy,” he acknowledged. “But the qualifying round is not finished. To
respect football, we need to go for the second match with an approach as
serious as possible. For sure, Mamelodi Sundowns will be as serious in the
second match as we were today.”
With one foot firmly in the group stages, Sundowns will host Remo Stars this
weekend, fully intent on finishing the task and maintaining momentum toward
their ultimate goal: going all the way in the competition.
