Following Bafana Bafana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup,
former Stellenbosch FC winger Diego Brown has urged Mamelodi Sundowns
players Jayden Adams and Fawaaz Basadien to consider loan moves in January
to bolster their chances of making the final squad.
With South Africa securing its first World Cup berth since 2002, competition
for places in Hugo Broos’ team is intensifying. Brown believes that for
Adams and Basadien, regular playing time is crucial, something they are not
currently guaranteed at Sundowns.
“Both came from lots of playing time at Stellenbosch to limited playing time
at Sundowns. They were key players,” Brown stated, acknowledging the
ambition behind their moves to a bigger club.
However, he emphasized the unique opportunity presented by the upcoming
tournaments. “For the sake of their dreams and aspirations, I would suggest
a loan move for them to get playing time. In my opinion, both of them need
this opportunity to represent their country.”
Basadien, a left-back, finds himself behind Aubrey Modiba and Divine Lunga
in the pecking order at Sundowns. Meanwhile, midfielder Jayden Adams has
struggled to recapture his initial form since joining the club and has
consequently been omitted from the last two national team camps.
Brown concluded that a temporary move would be a “no-brainer” for the duo,
giving them the best possible chance to impress coach Broos and secure a
spot for the AFCON and the historic World Cup campaign.
