Major Boost for Chiefs: How Eight Returning Players Could Change Their Season

Kaizer Chiefs are poised for a significant squad overhaul, with up to
eight players potentially becoming available after the FIFA break—six of
whom have not yet featured this season. This influx of talent could be the
catalyst the team needs to turn its fortunes around.

Defensive Reinforcement

Chiefs’ defense has looked vulnerable, managing just one clean sheet since
their 3-1 loss to Sekhukhune United. Conceding goals in draws against Marumo
Gallants and AmaZulu, along with a surprising 1-0 away loss to Kabuscorp,
has highlighted the issue.

This instability coincides with injuries to full-backs Thabiso Monyane and
Paseka Mako, who are both now nearing a return. Furthermore, the team is set
for a major boost with the long-awaited return of central defenders Rushwin
Dortley and Given Msimango. Dortley, a Bafana Bafana regular when fit, could
be particularly crucial in solidifying the backline.

Midfield Dynamism Needed

The midfield has at times struggled for balance, with players like
Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Thabo Cele, and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo unable to provide
consistent box-to-box presence. The potential availability of Lebohang Maboe
offers a solution; his ability to contribute in both attack and defense
would provide a much-needed dynamic boost to the engine room.

Solving the Attacking Puzzle

Chiefs’ struggle to convert chances remains a persistent problem. Despite
finishing last season with the highest expected goals (xG), they failed to
score consistently. This pattern has continued, with the Soweto giants once
again leading in chance creation this season but not finding the net enough.

Help is on the way, however. Asanele Velebayi has been cleared to play by a
SAFA Appeal arbitration, and Etiosa Ighodado is nearing a return from
injury. Their availability will add fresh options to a forward line in
desperate need of goals. The club must also decide whether to immediately
integrate young prospect Baartman, who has just returned from the U20 World
Cup in Chile, or allow him time to rest.
