Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 1-1 draw by Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium on
Tuesday evening, missing out on the chance to return to winning ways.
The Soweto giants handed a debut to new signing Khanyiso Mayo, while
Gaston Sirino, Ashley Du Preez, and Reeve Frosler returned to the line-up
after sitting out Saturday’s CAF Champions League clash. Glody Lilepo and
Flavio da Silva dropped to the bench.
Chiefs dominated possession from the outset, looking to exploit the pace
of Mayo and Du Preez, but their final ball often let them down in
promising positions. Gallants, content to sit deep and absorb pressure,
offered little going forward but remained a threat on the counter after
Chiefs’ struggles against Sekhukhune United the previous weekend.
The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute when Du Preez played in Mayo,
who finished neatly from close range to mark his debut with a goal. Just
before halftime, Chiefs had a golden chance to double their lead when Du
Preez won a penalty following Sibusiso Sikhosana’s handball. However,
Sirino’s effort from the spot was denied by Washington Arubi.
Gallants grew into the game after the break, forcing Chiefs into early
substitutions with Shabalala and Lilepo replacing Sirino and Mayo. Their
persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Jaisen Clifford curled a
superb strike into the top corner for his second league goal of the
campaign.
In search of a winner, Chiefs introduced Pule Mmodi and Nkosingiphile
Ngcobo late on, but despite sustained pressure, they failed to carve out
another clear chance and were forced to settle for a draw.
